Hello, lovely!

Welcome to Hyssop Design, a Los Angeles creative studio from the mind of Jacy Corral (that's me!) I am a graphic designer, hand lettering artist, and modern calligrapher lucky enough to live and work in sunny Los Angeles, California.

Handcrafted design for real people.

In an age of pixel-perfect digital precision, the authenticity behind brands and projects is often lost. I'm passionate about bringing handcrafted artwork into the digital world that represents real brands and real products to real people. Whether it's identity and branding work for logos, brochures, tradeshows, labels, or event design or more personal projects like weddings and galas, I am eager to bring your personality to each design in order to reach your target audience (which, let's be honest, is marketing jargon for "real people"!).

About

Here's a (relatively) short history of me...

After graduating from UCLA with a BA in Political Science/International Relations, I started my professional career in business development at a consulting firm and gradually made my way over to marketing. Over the course of about a year, I taught myself the fundamentals of graphic design (mostly at the mercy of some generous friends and their personal projects.) It wasn’t long before I fell head over heels in love with design. I went from creating wedding invitations on the side to taking over in-house design at the firm where I created corporate brochures, trifolds, and publications; decks; infographics; website landing pages; tradeshow designs; brand identity guides; and logos. It wasn't long before I was able to hire two more designers and add "Art Director" to the list of cool things I get to do. I went on to design for clients all over the world (read more about them below!)

In 2013 I was itching to get a pencil back in my hand. I hadn't done much more than doodle since taking high school art, but I knew I was missing something. So, I began writing down quotes and verses and ultimately “drawing” them in fun, quirky compositions. It became addicting - I would letter on anything/one that stood still for long enough. It was around this time that I discovered Jessica Hische’s Daily Drop Cap series, and I was instantly inspired. (Holy moly is that woman talented!) I took on a daily lettering challenge and once again fell head over heels in love with design – this time handcrafted! Over the past three years I have worked hard to learn various hand lettering and modern calligraphy styles and incorporate them into digital graphic design (my very, very favorite kinds of projects.) Now I find myself in this awesome, fantastic, often-unbelievable world, creating modern, sophisticated, handcrafted designs for amazing clients. From corporate and not-so-corporate graphic branding to elegant hand lettered script, I am inspired by every project. Up next: I would love to learn more about web and interactive design. Stay tuned!

CLIENTS

Let me tell you, I've worked with some incredible folks. The breadth of industries and services is wonderfully staggering: corporate consulting firms, community leaders, non-profits, schools, security experts, bakers, doctors, bloggers, brewers, photographers, pilates instructors, retailers, wedding and event planners, moms and dads, brides and grooms (and their moms!), and even an offshore oil drilling company (for real). Each client presents a unique and thrilling challenge, and I can’t wait to meet my next one!

WHAT’S WITH THE NAME?

Hyssop is a really beautiful plant with ancient roots (heh) in Biblical history. I love its beauty and meaningfulness in my faith. OH – did you mean my real name? That was a cruel joke from my parents. (KIDDING!) It’s a unique contraction of my full name: Jaclyn, which is why it's pronounced "Jackie." #themoreyouknow
